Start with one short-vowel family and hide the vowel — the child says the word aloud, hears the middle sound and writes it. Move on to first and last letters for beginning and ending sounds, then switch to the Dolch lists once decoding is solid. Each shuffle hides different letters, so the same list makes several pages.

Pick a preset (short-vowel CVC words or Dolch sight words) or type your own words, one per line. Each word is printed with one letter replaced by a blank — “c _ t” — and a letter bank at the top lists the letters that were removed. The answer key prints as a second page.
Choose “Vowel” to hide the middle sound (the classic CVC exercise), “First letter” or “Last letter” to practice beginning and ending sounds, or “Random” for a mix. Press Shuffle to get a different set of blanks for the same words.
CVC words are consonant-vowel-consonant words like cat, pen and dog — the first words most children decode. Dolch sight words are the high-frequency words (the, said, you…) that early readers learn to recognize on sight. The pre-primer and primer lists are included as presets.
