What goes in the pack

  1. A cover with the child’s name written in cursive and the list of what is inside.
  2. The alphabet: every capital and lowercase pair (Aa, Bb, Cc…) in gray to trace, each row followed by an empty row to copy it.
  3. One page per letter, by default the letters in the child’s name: a row of capitals, a row of lowercase letters and rows of short words that use the letter, from ant and apple to zoo and zebra.
  4. The name page: the name to trace across the line, again and again, with a line to write it alone under each one.
  5. Your words and sentences: this week’s spelling list or a line from a favorite book, wrapped to the line width you picked.
  6. A blank ruled page for free writing, with the same four guide lines.

Learning to print first? The name tracing generator and the handwriting worksheet generator make dotted print letters, and the Dolch sight words pack turns a word list into flashcards, read-trace-write pages and bingo.

About the letter style

The worksheets use Playwrite US Trad, the traditional United States style of Playwrite, a family of primary-school cursive fonts by TypeTogether (Veronika Burian and José Scaglione) based on the Primarium research into the handwriting models taught in schools around the world. It is free software under the SIL Open Font License, which is why the letters can be embedded in your PDF. The guide lines are drawn from the font’s own proportions: the small letters fill the space between the dashed midline and the baseline, and tall letters and tails take the same height again above and below.

Many schools in the United States teach a program such as Zaner-Bloser or D’Nealian, and these worksheets follow neither exactly. The lowercase letters and their joins are the familiar traditional ones; some capitals differ in their loops. If your child’s class uses one of those programs, check the capitals against the class chart.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make cursive writing worksheets?

Type the child’s name, choose what to include — the alphabet A–Z, one page for each letter of the name (or all 26), their spelling words and up to five sentences — and pick the line size. The preview shows every page as you type. Press “Download PDF” for a single file with all the pages, or Print.

Which cursive style do the worksheets use?

Playwrite US Trad, the traditional United States style of Playwrite, a family of primary-school cursive fonts by TypeTogether. It is not Zaner-Bloser or D’Nealian: the lowercase letters join the classic way, but some capitals may look different from the chart on your classroom wall.

What line size should I choose?

It depends on how big your child writes. Large lines (¾ inch from the top line to the baseline) give big letters for first lessons, 6 rows per page. Medium (½ inch) gives 8 rows, and small (⅜ inch) 12 rows for children who already write cursive with ease. If the class uses ruled paper, pick the size closest to it. Every row has a dashed midline for the height of the small letters and a dotted line for the tails of g, j, p, q, y and z.

Why gray letters instead of dotted letters?

Cursive is one continuous stroke per word, and a dotted outline of a thin cursive letter breaks into specks that are hard to follow. Solid light-gray letters show the whole path, including the joins, and the child traces right over them. Each traced row is followed by an empty row to copy it on their own.

Is it free, and is the name saved anywhere?

It is free, with no account and no watermark. The name, words and sentences are turned into the PDF inside your browser; nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored, and this page does not load session recording. If you want to come back to the same pack, use “Copy link”: the details travel after the # in the address, which never reaches our server. A sentence longer than 60 characters comes back shortened, and the page tells you when that happens.

Can I print just the cursive alphabet?

Yes. Download the ready-made cursive alphabet worksheet below (2 pages: every capital and lowercase pair to trace, each row with a line to copy) or the 26-page set with one page per letter and words that use it.
