At least 8 for a 3×3 card with a FREE center (9 without), 16 for 4×4, and 24 for 5×5 with a FREE center (25 without). More words than that makes the cards more varied, which is better for a real game. If you enter fewer, the missing squares are filled with placeholders so you can see the layout.
