Nine Easter and spring words hide in this 11×11 grid: JELLYBEAN, BASKET, SPRING, CARROT, BUNNY, CHICK, TULIP, HUNT and EGGS. SPRING and BUNNY read across, BASKET, CARROT and HUNT read down, JELLYBEAN and CHICK run down the diagonal, TULIP is written backwards and EGGS reads upward. The list is printed below the grid, and page 2 of the PDF is the answer key.
JELLYBEAN is nine letters long and crosses most of the grid on the diagonal, so finding it first opens up the rest of the puzzle. For EGGS, look for the double G stacked in one column: the word starts at the E below it and reads upward.
The mix of directions keeps children checking each letter in order, and the words — bunny, chick, carrot, tulip — are concrete nouns kids can picture, which helps beginning readers connect a spelling to its meaning.
Hide the printed puzzle as the last stop of an Easter egg hunt, or tuck it into the basket. In class, pair children up so one reads a word from the list while the other searches.

Which directions can the hidden words go?
Words hide across, down and along the downward diagonal — and a few sneaky ones run backwards. That's the kid-solvable set: tricky enough to be fun, no upward diagonals to hunt. Have your child cross each word off the list as they circle it so they always know what's left.

Why does the page look cut off when I print?
