Nine Christmas words are hidden in this 11×11 grid: REINDEER, STOCKING, PRESENT, SLEIGH, WREATH, COOKIE, SANTA, STAR and ELF. COOKIE and SANTA read across, SLEIGH, STAR and ELF read down, STOCKING and WREATH slant down the diagonal, and REINDEER and PRESENT are written backwards, from right to left. The list sits under the grid so children can tick off each word, and page 2 of the PDF is the answer key with every word highlighted.
The double E in REINDEER and the double O in COOKIE are easy patterns to spot, so they make good anchors. For the two backwards words, have your child read the rows from right to left: REINDEER starts at the R on its right end and runs leftward, and so does PRESENT from its P.
Searching row by row trains left-to-right visual tracking, the same eye movement used in reading, and the backwards words make children check letter order instead of guessing from a word's shape. ELF and STAR are short enough for a five-year-old to find alone.
Use it as a quiet activity while cookies bake, or slip it into an Advent calendar pocket. Older kids can turn the nine words into a short Christmas Eve story before the answer key comes out.

Which directions can the hidden words go?
Words hide across, down and along the downward diagonal — and a few sneaky ones run backwards. That's the kid-solvable set: tricky enough to be fun, no upward diagonals to hunt. Have your child cross each word off the list as they circle it so they always know what's left.
What does a word search actually teach?
Spelling and letter-pattern recognition, mostly: to find a word, a child has to hold its spelling in mind and scan for it — which reinforces whole-word recognition. It also builds the systematic left-to-right, top-to-bottom scanning that reading depends on.
