Nine sports words are hidden in this 11×11 grid: BASEBALL, SOCCER, TENNIS, HOCKEY, SKATE, GOLF, SWIM, TEAM and GOAL. SKATE and TEAM read across; TENNIS, HOCKEY, GOLF and SWIM read down; GOAL slants down the diagonal; SOCCER is written backwards and BASEBALL reads from bottom to top. The word list is under the grid and page 2 of the PDF is the answer key.
BASEBALL is the longest word, eight letters running upward, so look for its two B's stacked in the same column. The double C in SOCCER and the Y at the end of HOCKEY are other easy anchors.
Besides scanning and spelling, the list mixes team sports with ones kids do alone, which is an easy prompt to talk about which they have tried or would like to.
Use it as a rainy-day replacement for practice, or hand it out on the bus to an away game. Ask your child to circle the sports played with a ball in one color and the rest in another.

That's a bonus find! Random letters sometimes form short words by chance. Circle it in a different color and celebrate the sharp eyes — the word list is the goal, but incidental words are extra reading practice.
What does a word search actually teach?
Spelling and letter-pattern recognition, mostly: to find a word, a child has to hold its spelling in mind and scan for it — which reinforces whole-word recognition. It also builds the systematic left-to-right, top-to-bottom scanning that reading depends on.
What age is the Sports Word Search for?
